An LPN’s Role in Dialysis Treatment

A Licensed Practical Nurse, or LPN, is a nurse who works under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses (RNs). The roles of an LPN is similar to that of an RN, with a few key differences in education and what they are allowed to perform. Both LPNs and RNs can play a critical role in dialysis treatment, or as nephrology nurses.

What does an LPN do?

LPNs are responsible for lots of hands-on patient care and administrative tasks. Some of their typical duties may include:

  • Monitoring patient vital signs
  • Changing bandages
  • Inserting catheters
  • Providing basic patient care
  • Perform routine assessments, like taking blood pressure
  • Helping patients bath or dress

What does an LPN do in dialysis care?

An LPN who works as a nephrology nurse will oversee dialysis treatments for patients in acute or chronic kidney failure, and they may do this in a hospital, dialysis center, or help patients with in-home dialysis. Additionally, they may also:

  • Provide prescribed medical treatment and dialysis treatment to patients
  • Provide highly professional and technical nursing care
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care as needed
  • Collaborate with doctors and other care team members to provide the highest quality care
  • Ensure a secure and safe patient environment
