PCT’s Role in Dialysis Care

A PCT, or Patient Care Technician, is a healthcare professional who works with doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff to take care of patients. They are similar to Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), although they usually have more training, and they play a big role in dialysis care.

Becoming a PCT

PCTs need to have their high school diploma and undergo some additional training. At Health Systems Management, we require PCTs to:

  • Have a high school diploma
  • Complete classroom orientation quizzes and final exam
  • Obtain CCHT (Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician) credentials within 18 months of your first day

Responsibilities of a Dialysis PCT

  • Preparing the patient’s access for treatment initiation
  • Initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis per written policies, procedures, and standards of care
  • Obtaining patient’s vital signs before, during, and after dialysis treatment and appropriately documents inpatient medical record
  • Transporting patients to dialysis station and positions patient in chair for dialysis treatment
  • Monitoring patient for adverse reaction and dialysis equipment for malfunction
  • Demonstrating knowledge of infection control as related to hand washing and universal precautions
  • Responding appropriately to emergency situations
